I'd like to stick my neck out a bit in these few lines and talk politics. I don't mean to stick my nose into your voting booth. Your vote is your private business and happens on a secret ballot for very important and sacred reasons. And, I'm proud and honored to be your pastor without regard to which side of the aisle you claim for your own. My dear friend, Betty, is a devoted Christian at First Methodist Covington. I hold her in the highest esteem. She's a "Yellow Dog" Democrat and a saint. She steps into the voting booth with a heart inclined toward the poor and vulnerable. Her entire life is spent helping these children of God. The Bible is clear that God's heart leans toward the poor and Jesus echoed this prophetic concern. Honestly, I'd like to hear more concrete, pragmatic solution based speech from the conservative side of the aisle that shows compassion for hurting people. On the other hand, people should have "skin in the game" and be a responsible part of the solution to their problems. Has the wonderful work ethic that has enabled our nation to excel died and been buried without a funeral. We rob people of their dignity and foster a malignant culture of dependence when compassion degenerates into a give it to them free way of life. People who can work and contribute should work and contribute which is also a Bible message. I could say more, but I'm confident you understand these complex issues and you have the perfect right to your own way of thinking. Truth be known, like you, I'm disgusted with the political landscape at the state and national level. It has become nothing more than an expensive, televised mudslinging contest to see who can say the nastiest thing about the opponent. Could we please just focus on naming the problems and start proposing solutions? So, on behalf of Wanda Briscoe -- please go vote. Take your prayers and your convictions and make your mark. You will be a full participant in the greatest political process on the planet.  "One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all" is what we will be on inauguration day.
