May 6 Devotional

Chris Day, chairperson for the Alpharetta Methodist Men’s Ministry (AMen), brings us a devotional today.

“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” (Proverbs 2:6)

“I’m bored!” How many parents have heard this a time or two? I must admit that during the current stay-at-home situation, I might have had the same thought a few times myself!

Recently, during one such moment of weariness, I had an idea. Why not capitalize on the passion for mountain biking that my son and I share, and build a bike together? I’m not talking about buying a complete bike to assemble, but actually shopping for the individual parts and piecing them together to create a custom bike. The experience itself will be just as enjoyable as the end result, or so I thought!

Now, for anyone unfamiliar with the sport, there’s a lot more to bikes than wheels, pedals, and handlebars. Of course, I knew this going in, but I was soon overwhelmed by a whole new world of bottom brackets, headsets and derailleurs, oh my! Compatibility, quality, and price of each component are all considerations I hadn’t completely thought through. Even with all the information available online these days, there’s no instruction manual for a custom project like this.

Luckily for us, there IS an instruction manual when it comes to our journey through life! The Bible allows us to have the Word of God at our fingertips. As we’re taught in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “Every scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for showing mistakes, for correcting, and for training character, so that the person who belongs to God can be equipped to do everything that is good.” When I’m facing uncertainty (like most of us are right now), I turn to the Bible to keep me pointed in the right direction. Sometimes the path is clear, but there are plenty of times when I need prayer, our church leaders, small groups and other church resources to help me “figure it out”. While the church experience looks a little different right now, I feel extremely blessed that all these resources are still available to guide me on my spiritual journey. I pray you feel the same!

And now, back to the mountain bike build and figuring out how I’m going to attach the fork to the crown race and lower bearing…
