May 20 Devotional

As I was praying about this devotional, I kept hearing the words, “It’s not about a list.” As I prayed further, I feel like there’s someone reading this devotional that needs a reminder that Christianity is not a checklist or “To-Do” list. It’s simply relationship with God. When you think about your closest relationship, you don’t think about a list of things you have to accomplish or complete in order for the relationship to work. You simply spend time with that person.

It’s no different with our faith in Christ. We spend time with God. Of course, there are things we “do” to spend time with Christ, but that’s not the goal. In fact, Christ says to us in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” He’s specifically speaking to those who are tired of a faith built around rule-following.

He continues in verse 29 by saying, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls.” Taking his yoke is to take his interpretation of the scriptures, and when we take his interpretation and learn from him, it’s not exhausting, but refreshing and restful.

His interpretation of the law is love. Love God. Love Others. It’s that simple. When our faith exhausts us, we need to return to Jesus. In doing so, we’ll remember that his burden is easy and his yoke is light (Matthew 11:30).
