Daily Dose — May 29, Ascending the Psalms

It is summertime, vacations have been planned and will be enjoyed.  Some vacations will involve the beach.  If your family is like mine, time at the beach means time building sand castles.

Today’s Psalm of Ascent brings to mind the building of sand castles.  As they are built, it is with the knowledge that eventually the tide will come in and destroy the castle made of sand.  That is simply the fate of sand castles. Psalm 127  is one that seeks to remind us who is in control.

Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain. Unless the Lord guards the city, the guard keeps watch in vain.  It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives sleep to his beloved.  Sons are indeed a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.  Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the sons of one’s youth.  Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them. He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate. (Psalm 127)

 

“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.”  Unless the Lord build (fill in the blank) our house, our family, our relationships, our church- we labor in vain. There is much that we can do- but the things that really matter, the things that have lasting impact, the things eternal are built by the Lord.  Without Him, without His presence, guidance, wisdom and love what is built is much like the sand castle.  It may be impressive for a time but eventually the tide rolls in and it is all washed away. --Rev.
