Daily Dose, March 27 — Holy Week

“Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” And he said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death!” Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the cock will not crow this day, until you have denied three times that you know me.” (Luke 22:31-34)   “One act does not a person’s character make,” I said to Mrs. Fannie Lee as we talked about her husband’s suicide. We all have terrible moments of weakness and make poor choices. There is mercy and forgiveness in the heart of God. Jesus forgave Peter his moment of denial before it ever happened. “I’m ready to do prison time and I’ll die for you,” said Simon Peter with complete self-confidence. A few hours later, he heard the rooster crow and cried like a baby. Do not let this moment define you, said Jesus to Simon Peter. I have prayed your faith would not fail you after you fall short of your own expectations, said Jesus to Simon Peter. Satan is going to tell you that you are a good for nothing, worthless coward after the rooster crows. Don’t listen to Satan. Listen to me, Simon. Listen and remember that I love you and forgive you and that I’ll be there for you when this terrible moment for you and me has passed. Come back home to me, Simon. Come back and bring your brothers with you. They need you to be their leader. God be praised -- Simon Peter found the humility and strength he needed to forgive himself. It is still the first step required of anyone who chooses to be a Christian. -- Y’all come, Dr. Don
