Daily Dose, March 18 — R&R

I lift up my eyes to the hills— from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and for evermore.(Psalm 121) It won’t be long before summer is here, and for many people that means vacations. Lots of people will retreat to lots of places. Lots of people will hit the beaches. Our family will do that very thing in July. But I have a confession: I’m really a mountains kind of guy. I always have been. There’s just something about the experience of being in the mountains that feeds my soul like nothing else I’ve ever known. As you read this, I’m probably climbing a mountain in Arizona with my son. (It’s the spring break of his senior year, so we’re celebrating together by visiting an old friend and spending as much time outdoors as we can.) One thing that’s always been true for me: I sense God’s presence when I’m in the mountains. The environment causes me to feel fully alive - to breathe deeper and to see more clearly. When I do, I can’t help but seeing the handiwork of a powerful creator. The same powerful creator who made the tree-topped hillsides and lush valleys made me…and he loves me. When I’m in the mountains - away from other things and people and distractions - I often find myself most fully aware of the reality of God. My faith is strengthened. I pray as I walk. Praying seems as easy and natural as breathing when I’m in the mountains. It’s a good thing to retreat! Where do the mountains come from? They come from the Lord. Where does the breath of life come from? It comes from the Lord. Where does the air in my lungs come from? It comes from the Lord. Where does my help come from? It comes from the Lord. --Rev.
