Daily Dose, July 7 — True Independence

This week we have been celebrating that our independence flows from our dependence upon God,; because we are His, we are free.

Jesus put it this way, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32)

Our freedom flows from our dependence!

A disciple is a learner and is dependent on the teacher to teach truth, lead, guide and show the way. A teacher brings clarity and builds understanding.

We are Jesus’ disciples, His students, and we depend upon Him to teach us what is true, to lead us, guide us and show us the way.

We spend really taking in all He had to say, all He confronted, all He challenged and His bottom line — the Greatest Commandment, “Love the Lord your God with all your hearts, all your soul and all your mind…and love your neighbor as you love yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39)

When we really take it all in — when it moves from head knowledge to heart knowledge — it changes us from the inside out. The more we learn and grow, the more we want to learn and grow. And we continue to become more and more dependent on the one who is the very source of truth! Our dependence is our strength; our dependence makes us truly free.

Embrace that true freedom and truly live the life of abundance Jesus promised! He said, “I came that you may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10) — Rev. Terri Henkel
