Daily Dose, July 4 — True Independence

Happy Fourth of July!

Today many will enjoy picnics, barbeques and time with family and friends, as you wait for the sun to set and the fireworks to light up the sky. We will hear songs that will inspire pride in our great nation and gratitude to God for His many blessings.

We will hear “God Bless America, land that I love…,” and the words are so familiar, rich with meaning and heart. The next line of this beloved song is truly the prayer of the heart of countless Americans across this country and throughout the generations. We sing, “…stand beside her and guide her….” Those words are our humble prayer.

We need God! We need Him with us, leading us, guiding us and pouring upon us His Spirit, so that we can be a witness for His love and goodness in our homes, our communities and to the farthest parts of our world.

Today we celebrate freedom. Our challenge as Christians is how we use our freedom — how we live in a country that we love and how we allow our lives to make a difference.
Have you ever wondered what the Lord requires of His people?

Our answer is the same now as when the prophet Micah explained to Israel what God required of them then:

“He has told you O mortal, what is good; and what the Lord requires of you but to do justice, and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)

This is a list of action, not of sentiment or theory, but of actions the people of God are expected to strive towards: justice, kindness and humility. Are those traits that describe you this 4th of July? As we pray “God bless America…stand beside her and guide her…,” may we do our part and “do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with our God.” — Rev. Terri Henkel
