Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” -- John 11:25-26 I remember being in an informal Bible study several years ago. Most of us were young, and struggling to fully understand what it meant to be in Christ and have eternal life. The leader told us that it is as simple as accepting Christ into your heart as Lord and Savior. Someone in the group had the courage to ask, “That’s it? What else do I have to do? It seems too simple.” Such authentic questions from a new believer! Unfortunately none of us, including the leader of the group was fully equipped to answer this adequately. It is simple and it is complicated. Fast forward several years, I was reading Bonhoeffer’s The Cost of Discipleship. He had answered that very question eloquently. You see Christ offers us EVERYTHING. Through our faith and his grace alone we are saved. But then what ? Summarizing Bonhoeffer, if we do nothing, that is “Cheap Grace”. It is as if someone came to your door and placed a crate containing 100 pounds of gold at your threshold. You thank them, and then leave the treasure on the door step. You don’t really see the value, or open the crate, but act grateful out of courtesy because, after all, it seemed “nice”. If we really believe that Christ gave us everything, how can we respond … without seeking forgiveness, without sacrifice, without becoming a disciple? It does require unpacking and diligence. Discipleship is the ultimate obedience to Christ. Accepting Christ as Our Resurrected, Eternal Lord and Savior the simplest thing and the most complex thing you will ever do. Jeff Broka
