Daily Dose, July 11 — Bible Characters: Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego

 

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego — these three Jewish amigos made front page news by saying “No” to the offensive command of King Nebuchadnezzar. The king insisted that everybody in his kingdom fall down and worship the golden statue formed in the king’s image. Refusing to follow the king’s command got you thrown into a fiery furnace immediately.

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to forfeit their integrity and do something that was expressly forbidden by God. They worshiped only God, who delivered their nation from Egyptian slavery. They did not look for wiggle room in Commandment #1 and chose death instead.

Their statement of refusal (see Daniel 3:17) is a personal favorite of mine. “Maybe God will deliver us, or maybe he won’t. Either way, we will not cave in to you.”

That’s faith at its highest. The story says they survived the fiery furnace and came out without even smelling of smoke.

The culture and commotion of life in Alpharetta constantly squeezes us to fit in and do what everybody else is doing. It’s difficult, and you might even get burned by refusing to worship the golden statues. But there are some things that Christians must refuse to do no matter what — right?
