After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. (Luke 2:21)

Names matter. We choose carefully when we pick a name for our children. I’m named after the uncle I never met because diphtheria took his life when he was barely three years old. I bet you know where your name came from and to whom you are connected because of the name you carry. You will name him “Jesus” the angel said to both Mary and Joseph. The name was actually quite common in that day and time. It connects the person to Joshua who was quite a leader and a man who served God. The name literally means, “God is salvation” or “God saves” or will save. Quite a number of people who met Jesus would agree that he lived up to his name. Lazarus, Mary Magdalene, Zacchaeus, Simon Peter, Nicodemus are a few who come to mind just now. You can always add your name to the list if you’ll just give him a chance to do his job. -- Dr. Don Martin
