Daily Dose – August 28

Wes Maston, Director of Discipleship, is this week’s Daily Dose author. Wes has been a member of the Alpharetta Methodist staff since December. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from California State University, Fresno, and a Masters of Divinity from Emory University. Wes and his wife Jessica, have one son, Jack. Binaries can be misleading -- either you’re hot or you’re cold, good or bad, handsome or ugly, hero or villain... If only everything were so clear! Our heroes, though, are often tinged with villainy and our villains with heroism; or as Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn put it, “The line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being.” But not all binaries are false. One that holds up, at least in my experience, is “spiritually, you’re either growing or you’re dying.” In the next few days, I want to talk about spiritual growth by considering the five vows of a Methodist -- prayer, presence, gifts, service and witness -- and show how these commitments are intended to cultivate growth.
