Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) I drink a Smoothie most every morning for breakfast. Lisa started making them years ago and shamed me into giving it a try. She put in all kinds of grassy looking stuff along with powders and fruit before she turns on the blender. It’s really pretty good, but I’d rather have bacon. I do it for my body and I consider it the Christian thing to do. Your body is a gift from God and is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said as much when he was teaching the people with the Jerusalem temple just a stone’s throw away. Paul said the same thing when he said, “don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you? Don’t you know that you have the Holy Spirit from God, and you don’t belong to yourselves? You have been bought and paid for, so honor God with your body.” This healthy respect for our body has always been a part of Christian thinking about what is right and wrong. We don’t live a glutton’s life out of reverence for God who gave us our body. I moderate amount of alcohol because my brain and liver is a gift from God. A reasonable amount of bacon because my beating heart is a gift from God. Eat the broccoli salad because you care about the gift of eye and ear and arm and leg. You are the temple where God resides. So, enjoy the spinach. -- Dr. Don
