Prayers During the Pandemic

This collection of prayers and scripture readings was compiled from the July 19 Prayer Service.

Scripture Readings:

“God, listen to my prayer; don’t avoid my request! Pay attention! Answer me! I can’t sit still while complaining. I’m beside myself over the enemy’s noise…”

“Cast your burden on the LORD — he will support you! God will never let the righteous be shaken!”

Psalms 55:1-3; 22 [CEB]

“Come to me, all you who are struggling hard and carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Put on my yoke, and learn from me. I’m gentle and humble. And you will find rest for yourselves. My yoke is easy to bear, and my burden is light. ”

Matthew 11:28-30 [CEB]

“Throw all your anxiety onto him, because he cares about you. Be clearheaded. Keep alert. Your accuser, the devil, is on the prowl like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith. Do so in the knowledge that your fellow believers are enduring the same suffering throughout the world. After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, the one who called you into his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will himself restore, empower, strengthen, and establish you. To him be power forever and always. Amen.”

1 Peter 5:7-11 [CEB]

Thanksgiving for Provision
and Unexpected Blessings

Dear Heavenly Father,

We enter into your presence with praise and thanksgiving in our heart and in our voice.  We call upon you dear Lord, for you are our God.  Let us praise your holy name.  You are our Rock and our Redeemer. Let us praise your holy name forever.  You are the Supreme Creator and we praise you for your continuing creative Word.

We praise you for our nation.  One nation under God and founded on the principles of your Word.   We thank you for the Bible, the source of divine truth and for the hope of eternal life in Christ.

We are called into repentance and we ask that you forgive us our sins and the manifold ways we have rebelled against you.

We thank you for your continuous provision.  You have given us sun, wind, and rain.  You have provided the food we eat, the water we drink, and the very air we breathe.

We thank you for the blessings of family, friends, and neighbors who encourage and help us navigate through the precarious and troubled waters of these days.  Our times are in you hands.  You look down and see everyone.  You watch us all and you know our hearts and our every action. Help us to be pleasing in your sight.

We thank you for Christ, the author and perfecter of our faith.  We thank you for your creative word that shapes and reshapes our world, that restores and renews, and that transforms us.

We thank you for the comfort of your Spirit and we ask for healing of bodies, hearts, and minds.

Dear Holy Father, we need you, we need your very presence in this world, and we thank you, again, for your provision, your love, and your nearness for which we ask.

Please pour out your Spirit anew and bring revival in our hearts, our land, and the world.  May your unfailing love rest upon us and may we never cease to offer up to you praise and thanksgiving.  In the powerful name of Jesus Christ we pray.

Amen.

Healing for Those Affected by COVID,
Comfort for Those Who Have Lost Loved Ones,
and Prayers for Those Battling Other Illness
and Mental/Emotional Difficulty

O Lord, your compassion never fails and your mercies are renewed every morning: We give you thanks for providing our brothers and sisters both relief from the pain of COVID-19 and hope of health renewed. Continue in them, we pray, the good work you have begun.

Provide your peace to their families and walk with those who have lost loved ones during these very trying times. May your goodness and mercy surround all who are battling physical as well as mental illnesses.

“LORD, be gracious to us; we long for you. Be our strength every morning, our salvation in time of distress.”

Isaiah 33:2

Wisdom and Grace in Racial Tension

Look with pity, O Heavenly Father, upon those whose lives have been brutalized by the division, the violence, and the lawlessness of recent weeks. Have mercy upon us. Help us to eliminate our cruelty to those who are our neighbors. Strengthen and protect those who devote their lives to administrating equal protection under the law and promoting equal justice for all.

Almighty God, you have created us in your image. Grant us grace to fearlessly struggle against evil and to make no peace with oppression. We can have peace from the racial tensions gripping our nation, but only if everyone is on the same plan, your plan for your kingdom, oh God.

Oh God, it is your will that all should come to know you through your son Jesus Christ; inspire our witness to him that all may come to know the power of his forgiveness and the hope of his resurrection. And Lord, I pray for your church. We need a revival. A real revival that reacquaints us with the Christ of our salvation and sets us on a path of obedience. As one believer put it, “we need a devil chasing, Holy Ghost, Heaven-sent revival.”

And oh Lord, I pray for our leaders at every level of society. Leaders of our families, churches, schools, businesses, cities, states, and nation. I pray that you would raise up leaders that understand you are in control and more importantly, are humble enough to understand that they are not. Leaders who are proud to say, “I prayed about this and here’s what I believe God wants us to do.”

Lament Over What We’ve Lost in This Season

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank you that we may approach your throne of Grace in this season of loss.  This year Lord has been a season of loss.  Loss of jobs, loss of health, loss of money, loss of vacations, loss of travel, loss of relationships and loss of life.  Oh Father we are lamenting and mourning over everything that we have lost!

We come to you now with heavy hearts and broken spirits.  But you promise us that weeping last for the night, but joy comes in the morning. May we cling to your love for us O lord!  We know that you have been faithful and will continue to be faithful!

As your word promises in Lamentations 3:22, “Because of your Great love for us we are not consumed for your compassions never fail. They are new every morning! Great is your faithfulness! I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion therefore I will wait for Him.”

Help us dear Lord to trust in your faithfulness day by day and make us confident in your great promises for the future! Help us to fix our eyes on you, since our Hope is only found in you oh God.

So during the season of loss may our grief and sadness turn us toward you oh Lord and not away from you! Fill us with your Holy Spirit so that we may be comforted and strengthened!  Renew us, restore us, and revive us, trusting you that this season of loss will not last forever!  Thank dear Lord for hearing our prayer!

In the precious Name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

Prayers for Those Who Can’t Escape
Fear, Worry, Anxiety — Asking for Peace

Dear God, I come to you today asking for your help and guidance with my anxiety and my feelings of extreme worry, mental discomfort, fear and dread. Here are the times, places and situations when these feelings bother me the most: _____________________________.

When I am facing these situations, here are the mental and physical things that happen to me that are very distressing, draining and hard to handle: _____________________________.

I have tried different things in the past to try and make my anxiety go away. Here are some things that I have tried that didn’t seem to work: _____________________________.

I thank you for the following things that that I have tried that seemed to have helped me: _____________________________.

God, please show me how my anxiety is affecting my life and those around me. Here are some of things I used to do or would like to do that I don’t do because I’m avoiding situations that trigger my anxiety: _____________________________.

I thank you that I do not have to handle my anxiety alone. I thank you that you always hear my cry and that you are always there with me in my time of distress as it says in the Bible:

“When I am in distress, I call to you, because you answer me.” Psalm 86:7 [NIV]

I thank you, Jesus, that you know how I feel because before you were arrested and killed, you felt so distressed that you sweated profusely as it says in the Bible:

“He (Jesus) took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. ‘My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,’ he said to them… And being in anguish, he (Jesus) prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.” Mark 14:33,34; Luke 22:44 [NIV].

I thank you, God, that not only do you know and understand my anxiety, you actually share in my distress as it says in the Bible:

“In all their distress he too was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and mercy, he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.” Isaiah 63:9 [NIV]

With the strength I gain through knowing that you are here to help me, I now ask that you will guide me to the types of professional help that I may need to overcome my anxiety. Enable me to talk to my doctor about the physical symptoms that I have so I can put my fears to rest about having an underlying illness. If the cause seems to be anxiety, guide me to a good counselor, therapist, psychiatrist or other professional who can provide the therapy that’s necessary. If the professionals suggest medications, help me to accept this with an open mind remembering that you have provided medications as a means of healing. Now, please show me one step I can take today to find help the help I need: _____________________________.

Thank you, God, that with your help I believe that inner peace is possible. I want to learn to rely on you. I claim the promise that says,

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” Isaiah 26:3 [NIV]

Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27

I claim from your promises for a peaceful mind, an ability to trust you and the peace that you give me that enables me to have overcome fear.

I ask that you help me pray during my times of anxiety as I claim this promise:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” Philippians 4:6, 7

Amen.

Wisdom in Decision-Making
with Future School Decisions

God of the Universe, we humbly ask for your direction and guidance for all those involved in the education of young children you have entrusted to us.  As we now know, public education will be conducted with students learning at home this coming fall semester.

First, we lift our prayers for all teachers and educators tasked with preparing curriculum, presenting lessons and administering tests online. May You give them an abundance of WISDOM, CLARITY, PATIENCE and PEACE throughout this entire process.

(Pause)

Secondly, we lift our prayers for all students who will be learning in a manner they are not accustomed. For those in kindergarten up to college will need to learn and apply themselves in an entirely new way. Please grant them all the patience and discipline to commit their wonderful minds to learning and broadening their knowledge to achieve their individual educational goals.

(Pause)

Lastly, we lift our prayers for all parents that will have the responsibility to help guide and keep their children on task to complete their assignments and to patiently communicate with teachers when clarification and guidance is needed.

(Pause)

God, we fervently pray that you give all teachers, students and parents the assurance that you will grant an abundance of WISDOM, CLARITY, PATIENCE and PEACE throughout this new way of learning in our public schools and to keep everyone safe and healthy.

Amen.

Safety and Health as Our Communities
Open Up, Including Our Church

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.  Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8

Dearest Heavenly Father,

In this sacred moment of prayer, we come before you with bowed heads, and grateful hearts.  We humbly beseech you for your divine guidance, and protection as we embark on this new journey to reopen businesses, our beloved church, and every house of worship. As we press on with hope and anticipation, we confess at times we feel unsteady and uncertain about

what lies ahead on this uncharted course of new beginnings and unfamiliar new “normals.”

But you Father God, know well the road we are about to take.  We trust you and love you with our whole hearts, and are clinging ever so tightly to your promise… your Holy covenant.. to be with us always. We praise you and give you thanks that you as our precious Abba, have gone before and have paved the way for us, your beloved children. You, as the one who loved us first and loves us best will be our guide, protector and bright beacon light,

as the doors open wide in every house of worship, and businesses in all communities begin to reverse the door signs that for far too long read “Closed until further notice – COVID-19,” to “We are open for business.”

Hear us dear Savior, as we come to your Holy presence and ask you to heal our world , heal our bodies, strengthen our hearts and minds as you ready us for these new beginnings. We ask you Father, to please build a formidable hedge of protection, decrement around us all. That we look to you alone for answers.  We lift up our voices in praise to you as we give you thanks that we can trust in your enduring faithfulness to be our guide and friend as we step out into the world. Help us all to deeply understand that by adhering to safety guidelines, we are truly expressing our love for you and  those who you love so dearly. For our pastors, leaders and business owners who are now in the process of making difficult decisions as to when and how to reopen safely, we ask that you, as the Holy Spirit, impart upon them your unfathomable wisdom in full measure. May every other voice, but yours be downed out..silenced..so they are able to clearly hear you, and lean into your divine counsel.

Thank you dearest  Savior for breathing into us the precious gift of the Holy Spirit, who gently reminds us that we are loved by love itself, that we are forever yours..and will NEVER journey alone.

May the Lord bless you and keep you forever shielded under His wing. In the name of Christ Jesus, our Lord.

Amen.

Hope for God’s Presence in Today and Our Future

Heavenly father, we are your humble servants,
We come before you today in need of hope.
There are times when we feel helpless,
There are times when we feel weak.
We pray for hope.
We need hope for a better future.
We need hope for a better life.
We need hope for love and kindness.

Some say that the sky is at its
darkest just before the light.
We pray that this is true, for all seems dark.
We need your light, Lord, in every way.

We pray to be filled with your light from
head to toe. To bask in your glory.
To know that all is right in the world,
as you have planned, and as you want
it to be.

Help us to walk in your light, and live
our lives in faith and glory.

In your name we pray,

Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father,who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name;
thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.

Amen
