Adult Sunday School Classes
|
Sunday School is a way for everyone to grow in the knowledge and love of God by learning, serving, praying and playing together.
All Sunday School classes meet at 9:45 am and all classes welcome visitors!
On Sunday mornings, you can ask for help from our Greeters at the Welcome Desks outside the Narthex and in the lobby of Trinity Hall.
Adult Sunday School classes will not meet on Easter, March 31. Please join us for Easter Sunday worship at 7, 9 and 11 a.m. Click here for details.

Abiding in the Vine
Location: *MS 212
Age Range: 40-70
Inspired by the verses in John 15:1-17, the Abiding in the Vine class strives to follow Jesus Christ and be obedient to God. By “abiding in Him,” class members strive to fulfill His purpose in their lives. The class is a mix of faith journeys and ages. This diversity lends itself to thoughtful discussion. Recent studies have included Ephesians; “Christianity’s Family Tree,” by Adam Hamilton; and a class on honoring parents into their golden years. Several studies have been written by noted Christian author Andy Stanley. Curriculum has included a variety of media, occasional guest speakers, small group prayers and hymn sings. Abiding in the Vine is very involved outside of the classroom, with quarterly events for families or couples and annual gender-specific events, like fishing trips for the guys and boating for the girls. The class supports many missions, including tending the memorial garden outside of Trinity Hall, providing food for Trinity Soup Kitchen and preparing barbeque for FALLFest.

In His Steps
Location: *MS 208
Age Range: 40 plus
In His Steps Sunday School class draws its name from 1 Peter 2:21, “Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in His steps.” The class is comprised of members who are single and married, working and retired – all of whom are striving to be more Christlike. The class is led by Bebe Nicholson, AFUMC member and author of “When a Believer Marries a Nonbeliever.” In His Steps uses books and video for short-term studies that are highlighted by open discussion. Recent studies have included 1 Corinthians, Titus and “The Case for Faith: A Journalist Investigates the Toughest Objections to Christianity,” by Lee Strobel. Class members host occasional get-togethers and an annual Christmas party. A mission-oriented group, class members serve as ushers and small group leaders. Several sing in the Chancel Choir. The class as a whole supports AFUMC’s FALLfest and adopts a needy family each Christmas.

Breakfast Club
Age Range: 25-40
Comprised primarily of couples starting families, the Breakfast Club is close-knit, inquisitive and fun-loving. Recent class studies have included “Christianity’s Family Tree,” by Adam Hamilton; “The Screwtape Letters,” by C.S. Lewis; and “Not a Fan: Becoming a Completely Committed Follower of Jesus,” by Kyle Idleman. Two of the Breakfast Club’s favorite authors are Adam Hamilton and Rob Bell. Outside of Sunday morning meeting, class members host holiday parties and small group dinners and serve the community at places such as the Drake House and EnAble. Class members rotate bringing breakfast every Sunday morning.

New Creations
Age Range: Mid 40s-60
Led by college professor Steve Hudson, New Creations’ discussions tend to acquire an intellectual and historical feel. In the end, the discussions always return to “where the rubber hits the road.” New Creations is a “friendly, casual and humorous” group. Activities outside of class have included blueberry picking, fish fries and barbeque gatherings. Members have supported Red Bird Mission and Clinic, the Tiny Stitches ministry and Campus Crusade for Christ.

Builders
Age Range: 30-85
When the Builders class was formed, its members came from a variety of locations and denominations. Since they were endeavoring to form new relationships while following Christ the carpenter, they called themselves “Builders.” Recently, the class has studied Romans and James. The Builders class is an interactive, “diverse group of Christians affirming each other in our attempt to grow more in Christ.” In the past, their mission projects have included service at the North Fulton Community Charities food pantry and for the Great Day of Service.

New Visions
Location: **T 349
Age Range: 35-49
When the New Visions class was originally formed, its members were “young and wanted the name to represent our age.” Now that they’ve aged a few years, class members joke about changing the name to “Impaired Vision.” Comprised of couples and single parents with grade school children, members of the class tend to be opinionated, but also thoughtful and accepting. Class time includes open discussion, often about a book by favorite author Max Lucado. Members gather for family outings and have previously supported EnAble of Georgia.

Cobb Class
Age Range: 70 and up
The Cobb Class analyzes scripture using Bible commentaries. The class was originally organized in 1946 to serve the needs of young adults, at a time when many young men were returning from service in World War II. The class still honors its namesake, Eulalia Cobb, who served as class leader for more than 15 years. Her portrait still hangs in their Sunday School room. The Cobb Class strives to be friendly, fun and caring. Class members volunteer for many church duties, including delivering flowers and, every Friday afternoon, inserting flyers into worship bulletins.

Open Door
Location: Bagley House
Age Range: 60 plus
The Open Door class name recalls the United Methodist Church’s slogan, “Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors.” Open Door pursues a traditional study of the Bible, focusing on reading scripture. Members support North Fulton Community Charities and Paraguay missionary Christian Dickson, who hails from Alpharetta Methodist.

Discerning Hearts

Age Range: 40 plus
Named for class members’ desire to find God in their lives, Discerning Hearts is a women’s group comprised of ladies from all walks of life. Recently, class curriculum has included the “Women of Faith” video series and “Come Thirsty,” by Max Lucado. Members enjoy reading books together; one of their recent favorites was “Calm My Anxious Heart: A Woman’s Guide to Finding Contentment,” by Linda Dillow. Discerning Hearts participates in mission work once a month for such organizations as MUST Ministries and Abba House. When asked to describe themselves in three words, class members said, “laugh, cry, talk.”

Pairs and Spares
Age Range: 40-80
Formed in the mid-70s, Pairs and Spares was named for its inclusion of couples and singles. Recent studies have included “Discovering God’s Will,” by Andy Stanley, “Fearless: Imagine Your Life Without Fear,” by Max Lucado, and “The Me I Want to Be: Becoming God’s Best Version of You,”by John Ortberg. The group is oriented toward serving others. Class members have collected food for the North Fulton Community Charities food pantry, done yard work for shut-ins and helped with renovation of AFUMC’s Bates House. Many class members have participated in Honduras mission trips.
Pairs and Spares is currently studying "Twelve Unlikely Heroes," by John MacArthur. The study examines men and women who, in spite of their shortcomings and inadequacies, played pivotal roles in God's kingdom work. All of them were unimpressive, forgettable or ill equipped in their own ways, but the Lord accomplished mighty things in them and through them.

Family Blessings
Location: *MS 103
Age Range: 30-50
The Family Blessings class is comprised of parents with young children, from infants to middle school aged. Members often discuss topics such as godly parenting and marriage. Recent studies have included “Effective Parenting in a Defective World,” by Chip Ingram and “The Model Marriage,” from the “Focus on the Family Marriage Series.” Members alternate serving as facilitator of discussions. Outside of Sunday School, class members enjoy a monthly girl’s night out, Christmas parties and events that include their children. The class has supported a variety of ministries, including Attic Treasures, Homestretch and Abba House.

Pathfinders
Age Range: 40-60
The members of Pathfinders are constantly seeking to “find their path” and follow Christ. Recently the class has studied Romans chapter 12, and “Becoming a Contagious Christian,” by Bill Hybels and Mark Mittelberg. Some of Pathfinders’ favorite authors include Chip Ingram, Lee Strobel and C.S. Lewis. The class uses Bible studies that include study guides and DVDs, with class members rotating teaching responsibilities. The Pathfinders membership can be described as “supportive, loving and seeking God’s will.”

Families of Faith

Age Range: Mid-30s to 50s
Families of Faith was named to reflect class members’ desire to incorporate their families into their own spiritual growth. Families of Faith is a social, family-oriented group, with members seeking to find God in their daily lives. Recent topics of study have included forgiveness and parenting. The class hosts an annual a Christmas party for the Alpharetta Methodist maintenance staff. Members have also participated in Baked with Love cupcake ministry for the Atlanta Women’s Day Shelter, and send card to shut-ins.

The study of the Bible

Age Rane: 30-50
Named after the 80s TV show, Family Ties is a group of young parents focusing on Christian living, marriage and children. Recent studies have included the importance of godly friendships; self-worth based on Christ’s love; and faith, fears and overcoming failure. A favorite study has been the NOOMA series, short films that explore our world from Jesus’ perspective. Class time is highlighted by open discussion, and each gathering begins with a “Favorite Things” discussion that helps participants get to know each other better. A mission-oriented group, the class adopts a less fortunate family each Christmas, purchasing items on the family’s wish list. Family Ties has also been very involved in the AFUMC Special Needs Ministry. The class’s motto is, “Havin’ Fun, Doin’ Good.”

Serendipity
Location: **T 351
Age Range: 50-90
Named because class members gather together in joy, the Serendipity class is an intellectually oriented group. Class time features academic, open discussion. Recently studies include United Methodism, world religions and the Holy Spirit. Serendipity members are always there to care for each other.

Footsteps
Location: *MS 109
Age Range: Teen-60
Footsteps is a very diverse class pursing a wide variety of discussion topics. The class generally alternates a six-week Bible study, such as the book of James, with a book study, such as “When the Game Is Over, It All Goes Back in the Box,” by John Ortberg. The Footsteps class welcomes anyone with a sense of humor who wants to grow in faith.

Singles 40+
Location: *MS 111
Age Range: 45-70
Singles 40 Plus is still working on their catchy name, but they are already a small supportive group. These single women stand ready to welcome both men and women who are “single on Sunday” to join the class. Past studies have included Revelation, Isaiah and strong characters of the Bible. Members often host pot luck dinners and attend shows together.

Friends and Followers

Age Range: 30 plus
Friends and Followers in one of AFUMC’s newest Sunday school classes and welcomes adults who are single. Created in 2013, the class is focused on helping members actively apply their faith to their everyday lives. Friends and Followers has already completed the NOOMA series, short films that explore our world from Jesus’ perspective. Members enjoy using videos to supplement their studies.

Spirit in Action
Location: **T 355
Age Range: 30-50
Spirit in Action was formed 20 years ago with the desire to be the hands and feet of Christ. Its members are laid back, supportive and very active in church. Recently the class studied “It Came from Within!: The Shocking Truth of What Lurks in the Heart,” by Andy Stanley. Other studies have included Revelation and the NOOMA series, short films that explore our world from Jesus’ perspective. Spirit in Action is a family-oriented group that enjoys supporting missions such as MUST ministries and the Paraguay mission team. Outside of class, members host quarterly small group dinners, monthly luncheons and an annual Christmas party.
