Local Missions

Alpharetta First United Methodist Church provides financial and physical support to organizations that serve our community. We invite you to participate in the following mission efforts.

The Backpacks of Love ministry delivers backpacks full of non-perishable food and needed items to homeless and at risk children and their families in Forsyth and North Fulton counties. Volunteers commit to filling a backpack and dropping the off at the church every other week during the school year.

Do Something Days are offered several times a year as opportunities for the church family to “do something” to help others. Projects are available on the church campus at at several of our local ministry partners.

The Drake House provides affordable housing to single women and mothers. Programming includes classes in finance, parenting skills, computers, health and wellness. The Drake House helps 60-75 families a year. Alpharetta Methodist sponsors one of the 16 apartments located in Roswell.

Volunteer opportunities:

  • Apartment cleaning and decorating before a new mom arrives
  • Sponsorship of a mother in the AFUMC apartment
  • Mentoring — money management
  • Mentoring — Life skills development
  • Mentoring — Youth life skills development
  • Helping to organize and sort at the Drake Closet, a thrift store (26 Old Roswell St., Alpharetta)

DreamWeavers of Georgia is dedicated to making the transition into foster care less stressful on for children.

Volunteer opportunities:

  • Donate gently used or new suitcases/duffle bags
  • Sponsor a foster child or children
  • Help to monitor parent visits
  • Work events (Christmas, chaperone for Christmas parade, movie night, etc.)
  • Babysit
  • Office work
  • Christmas — Through the annual Giving Tree at Alpharetta Methodist, church members give presents for foster children.

EnAble of Georgia provides services to adults with developmental disabilities. Residents live as independently as possible, while remaining close to friends and family.

Volunteer opportunities:

  • Collecting toiletries and cleaning supplies
  • Light yard work and maintenance help
  • Sponsoring a party for residents

HomeStretch helps local homeless families by providing short-term transitional housing and an individualized support program of mentoring, money management and life skills development.

Volunteer opportunities:

  • Sponsoring the AFUMC apartment (helping with furnishings, providing basic household supplies)
  • Money management mentorship
  • Sponsoring a family a Christmas and other holidays
  • Life skills mentorship

North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC) provides support for persons living in the North Fulton area by supplying help during times of need. NFCC assists families with rent, utilities, transportation, food, clothing, medicine and other basic needs by pooling the resources of local religious, business and civic groups and individuals.

Volunteer opportunities:

  • Quarterly church food drives (participate or help organize)
  • Warm coat drive (donate new or gently used coats each fall)
  • Book bag and school supplies collection (late summer)
  • Volunteer at the NFCC Thrift Store
  • Assist with delivery of items after a collection or after weekly food donations from local businesses
